Assignment 2 - Design a calendar

For this assignment,we are to design a calendar based on festive season. As typical as i can be,i chose the Malaysian's festive season of Hari Raya Aidilfitri whichs falls on the month of September.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is..

A muslim's festival and derived from Arabic sentences 'Eid ul-Fitr' which means 'Feast of the Breaking of the Fast'. Hari Raya Aidilfitri (also seen as Hari Raya Puasa, literally "Celebration Day of Fasting") is the Malay term for the Muslim festival of Eid ul-Fitr. Hari Raya is also known as Lebaran. Muslims in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore celebrate Eid like other Muslims throughout the world. The term "Hari Raya" literally means "Day of Celebration".

The Greetings..

The main greeting used by Muslims in Malaysia and Singapore is "Selamat Hari Raya" which means "Happy Eid" in Malay. Another greeting is "maaf zahir dan batin" which translates loosely to "I seek forgiveness (from you) physically and spiritually", for Hari Raya is a time to reconcile and renew relationships with others.

The Celebration..

During the day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri,It is customary for Malays to wear traditional Malay costumes. The dress for men is called baju Melayu while the women's are known as baju kurung and baju kebaya. Traditional textiles such as songket and batik are worn favourably during this day.
Muslims will attend Eid prayer in the morning and consecrate together harmoniously while taking the chance to meet and greet each other. Hari Raya is a very joyous day for children for this is the day where adults are extra generous. Children will be given token sums of money, also known as duit raya from their parents and elders.

During the night, there are often celebrations with sparklers and firecrackers. Despite of the enforcement of banning firecrackers, more Malay children turn to home-made firecrackers such as meriam buluh (bamboo cannon) as alternatives to commercial fireworks. Usually the lighting of firecrackers begins a few days before the end of Ramadan, and continues for about a week afterwards.

Choosing calendar..

We are to use one of the of calendars provided and to follow the design as well as the layout, just the objects can be changed but the positioning and the layout design must remain the same.

The calendar

and I chose..

By the descriptions and calendar chosen above, my design will be based on me,myself celebrating Hari Raya during the day and night and I will add elements which relates to it.

final logo wuhoo!

tadaaaaaaa!

The meanings of..

The coffee cups

The three coffee cups symbolizes malays, chinese and indians all in one country which is Malaysia. And the color yellow denotes happiness, warmth, cheers and joy,and in which i wanted to put it in a way that we,all 3 races can live in happiness n joyfulness together and which also means sitting, chilling and enjoying a cup of coffee together^-^

Banana leaf

Green is life. Abundant in nature, green signifies growth, renewal, health, and environment...Basically,this reminded me of Malay people, which we usually eat our traditional food 'nasi lemak' wrapped up in banana leaf.'Nasi lemak' also is usually served for breakfast, and so is coffee. So why not have a cup of hot coffee to go with it;)

Red circle

Denotes purity, joy, and celebration. Red is the color of happiness and prosperity for chinese people and may be used to attract good luck.It also symbolizes unity...and this is what pop out from my head when i think of red.The red rounded table that chinese uses to dine in for big celebration.A celebration for Chinese New Year and a celebration of the opening of the new local Starbucks coffee;D

The uniquely brown

Brown is a down-to-earth,warm neutral color.Which made me thought of little indian childrens with brown warm, innocent, happy faces with no feelings of worries in the world. This is what you will feel and enjoy in every sip of starbucks coffee. It stimulate the appetite and ease up your mind and wash out all the worries from job stress and tention.

Lastly, the green circle and texts.I kept it this way to preserve the originality of starbucks coffee.

the progress..

As u can see from my re-design logo, the rounded thingy is a coffee cup,3 cups and saucers, viewed from
above and under/behind it is a banana leaf.
ill first show you the steps/progress before explaining the colors and shapes.

This is the outline i've drawn using the pen tool which iv traced from my sketched logo.i cleared out the overlapped lines of the saucers using shape modes in pathfinder.Took me awhile to do that at first-.-' so actually turned out that was easy sooo, moving on to the next step..

Ok now iv colored my logo.a bit.iv changed the outline of the coffee cups and the leaf using different brushes from the 'brush libraries menu'.played around with it and there,i got my outline.i wanted it to look more natural-like rather than clean straight lines, and i added drop shadow effect for the cups, outer glow effect for the leaf and some steam effect for the coffee but using the brush tool.Colored the cups yellow and the leaf green and the coffee brown.why?later..k next..

Here it is,iv put some background which is green n red.I used ellipse tool to make the red and using border lines in brushes for the green.

Next,Starbucks coffee!yeayyeyeyyeyyaye!!!
ehem...k for the font i used regular copperplate gothic bold and colored blue.i used the arc style in warp options to make a curve above the logo for the STARBUCKS and none for the COFFEE,but then again i changed the style and color of the font and i added some green outline...(eh syapeq buzzed)...moving on~

\

Im just zooming in this part to show the change i made and added outer glow effect to the text.

Here i used graphic styles for the circle to add depth. Its not neatly refined yet but just to show you.see there?shadow~shadow~(nidji's song)hehe.

my sketched logo

this is a rough sketch of my re-designed logo.

More details will be added afterwards,i hope so it'll turn out great.thou i am a freshman in doing all this stuff but im eager to learn..besides,we all do learn from mistakes ehhh

A Brief History Of Starbucks Coffee

Started in year 1971,Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market..
is where the first store of the worlds finest coffee STARBUCKS.

1970's ; The first Starbucks opens. The name comes from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, a classic American novel about the 19th century whaling industry. The seafaring name seems appropriate for a store that imports the world’s finest coffees to the cold, thirsty people of Seattle.

1980's ; Howard Schultz joins Starbucks in 1982. While on a business trip in Italy, he visits Milan’s famous espresso bars. Impressed with their popularity and culture, he sees their potential in Seattle. He’s right – after trying lattes and mochas, Seattle quickly becomes coffee-crazy.

1990's ; The demand for great coffee allows Starbucks to expand beyond Seattle, first to the rest of the United States, then further a field. After becoming one of the first companies to offer stock options to its part-time employees, Starbucks becomes a publicly traded company.

2000's ; The Starbucks phenomenon continues. At the time of writing, Starbucks has more than 6,000 locations in over 30 countries. In addition to our excellent coffees and espresso drinks, people now enjoy Tazo® tea and Frappuccino® ice blended beverages.
