How do Malay people celebrate birthdays??

Actually, Malay people do not celebrate birthdays with cakes and presents like other cultures. The real way they celebrate it is by just making a gathering, not a party, at home and say prayers together for the good blessings in the future of that person and later served dishes and drinks to the guests. This was originally brought up by the Middle East, the Arab people who came to Malaysia to make deals in the era of Sultan Melaka. Eventually, lived here and even some of them married the Malays. By that, Malays are influenced by Arabs traditional culture.

Description of my brithday card..

I changed the three elements(the muffins) to a more malay cultural elements which is the traditional instruments, tambourine and 'kompang'(on the left side) , 'pulut kuning'(center) and 'ang pao'(on the right side). and what are they?...

Tambourine and 'Kompang'

Tambourine

kompang

Kompang is one of Malays popular traditional musical instrument.the skin of the kompang is made by goat skin and it was originally came from the Middle East. The way to play the kompang is by thumping it with fingers or palm.Kompang is usually used for a certain traditional ceremony and one of them is when celebrating birthdays. The tambourine also is brought up from the Middle East,Persian. The tambourine or Marine is a musical instrument of the percussion family consisting of a frame, often of wood or plastic, with pairs of small metal jingles, called "zils". Classically the term tambourine denotes an instrument with a drumhead. Which is also played in special ceremony or celebration of birthday. These have influenced Malays for many years and till now they still play these instruments in celebration and special ceremonies.

Pulut Kuning

'Pulut' means a glutinous rice and 'kuning' is yellow. In the older days, one of the ingredient which could be made as food coloring was turmeric. The 'pulut' changed to a yellowish color because it is soaked in turmeric water. The color yellow was believed to be very inviting and joyful to be served to the guests. It is also a custom in religious ceremony. Without the giving of 'pulut kuning', the ceremony will not be perfect. Likewise in birthday celebration, the 'pulut kuning' will be decorated nicely and made in different shapes and sizes, yet in the present day, there are not many people who celebrate birthday with 'pulut kuning' but it is still made for religious ritual ceremony like the completion of reciting the Qur'an.

Ang Pao

Ang Pao is packets filled with money,a tradition which originated from the Chinese. It is a monetary gift which is given during holidays or special occasions. Mainly presented at social and family gatherings such as weddings or on holidays such as the Lunar New Year. Since Malaysia is a multi-cultural country, Malays are also influenced by the Chinese traditional culture like giving Ang Pao in special occasions, such as Hari Raya, weddings and also in birthday celebrations. This is considered as a common tradition in Malaysia and is still practice until now.

The colors
The 3 elements are made colorful and earthy tone to show the look of a Malay culture which blends in birthday celebration in the modern days. I made the background of a soft pink and olive greeen to show happiness and sheer joy in celebrating birthdays.

The birthday song
The text 'Allah selamatkan kamu!' is meant by 'may god bless u' which is a song sing by Malays in birthday celebration,it goes like this "ALLAH SELAMATKAN KAMU, ALLAH SELAMATKAN KAMU, ALLAH SELAMATKAN 'name of the person', ALLAH SELAMATKAN KAMU", which is pretty much like repeating back the sentences.heh.

How did i make the card??

My progress yee..

First, like all of my previous works,i sketch my design on a piece of paper.just a rough sketch to get the idea of the design. Here i started making the outline with Ai as well..(On the left is the tambourine and 'kompang',in the middle is 'pulut kuning' and on the right is packets of money usually called 'angpau'..ill put up the explanation for all these later)..continue!

and this is the outline which iv traced from my sketch, press Delete button to erase the sketched outline, then put all this in one layer..

to fill in color in an area, again, like i did on my calendar assignment, make a path by selecting the area using the selection tool (V), exp; the 'pulut kuning', using the Live Paint Bucket(K),click it on the 'pulut kuning' as shown below, see, the red line will appear..

pick a color in the color swatches and click on the area..there~

coloring,done..now to make it stand out,i just added shadows and some minor effects, exp, the candle's flame using gradient(red + orange),type ; radial..

So this is how it looks like,i repeatedly used gradient on the tambourine, 'kompang', angpau and the plate..

Make another layer for the background, using gradient again, type; linear, angle; 90 degrees. For this,i used 'extra' light yellow eheh...

This is the second background, also put this in a new layer, point is so that it can be edited easily.I used this nice soft pink color for it.You can choose the color from the color picker, just click twice on the box shown by the red arrow..

Now,to make the background for the greeting text.Open a new document/canvas,select Rectangle tool (M) and make a vertical rectangle like this..

Next, make another rectangle by selecting the one that you've made, press control C to copy and control V to paste(i didnt know how to do the copy paste till charlotte told me,credits to u!)...

Now do the same thing again by selecting the two rectangle and copy paste it which gives you another two! adoi-.-..

You get the idea now so just copy paste it until you fill in the whole space. For this i made 2 different colour sripes.

Next step, select the background, click on it and drag it to your birthday card as shown below..

Place the background nicely^-^..Lets move on to the text layout eh. As you can see,i made the text 'Allah selamatkan kamu!' in a wide, curved position to fill in the upper space..you can do this by first select the text and then select the 'make envelope' button and choose arc...

type of fonts and size i picked..

and for the greeting text..an olive green color.font type; Cooper Std, size; 47.. i circled it black.its not black by the way,im color blind for awhile there=.=' ..

I added some drop shadow effect on the 3 elements,go to effect; stylize; drop shadow...

Almost done here.Crop the layout nice and smart in a perfect rectangular shape..

birthday...

Definition of Birthday

Birthday is the name given to the date of the anniversary of the day of a person's birth. People in many cultures celebrate this anniversary. In some languages, the word for birthday literally translates as "anniversary". Birthdays are traditionally marked by celebrations including a birthday party or, in some particular cases, a rite of transition.

Origin
It is thought the large-scale celebration of birthdays in Europe began with the non-Christian cult of Mithras, which originated in Persia, and was spread by soldiers throughout the Roman Empire. Such celebrations were uncommon previously so practices from other contexts such as the Saturnalia were adapted for birthdays.
Because many Roman soldiers took to Mithraism, it was distributed widely and its influence was spread throughout the empire until it was supplanted by Christianity.
Opposition
The celebration of birthdays is not universal. Orthodox Christianity prefers the celebration of name days. Some Christian communities may celebrate both naming days and birthdays.

The Jewish perspective on birthday celebrations is disputed by various rabbis. In the Hebrew Bible, the one single mention of a celebration being held in commemoration of someone's day of birth is for the Pharaoh. The bar mitzvah of 13-year-old Jewish boys, or bat mitzvah for 12-year-old girls, is perhaps the only Jewish celebration undertaken in conjunction with a birthday; however, the essence of the celebration is entirely religious in origin (the attainment of religious maturity according to Jewish law) not secular, despite modern celebrations where the secular "birthday" elements predominate. With or without the "birthday" celebration, the child still automatically attains his or her bar or bat mitzvah, and its celebration may be any date following his or her 13th anniversary of birth.

Some Sunni and Shia Muslim scholars oppose birthdays, but some allow celebration of the birthday of the prophet Muhammad, although it is important to note there is no basis for this practice (i.e., no evidence in the Quran or Authentic Hadith).

Jehovah's Witnesses do not celebrate birthdays. They point to the birthday celebrations in the Bible for Pharaoh, and for Herod, the latter being the occasion for the beheading of John the Baptist.

Celebration
The birthday cake is traditionally highly decorated, and typically covered with lit candles when presented, the number of candles signifying the age of the celebrant. The person whose birthday it is may make a silent wish and then blow out the candles. After that, the person can open their presents. It is also common for the person celebrating their birthday to cut the initial piece of the cake as a newlywed couple might with a wedding cake.

Birthday cakes date back as far as the Middle Ages when the English would conceal symbolic items such as gold coins, rings and thimbles inside their cakes. Each item was associated with a prediction. For example, a person finding a gold coin in a birthday cake would supposedly become wealthy; a person discovering a thimble would never marry.
Sometimes special candles are substituted for the many individual candles in the shape of a numeral. For example, on the fifth birthday, there may be one candle on the cake in the shape of the numeral five, and on the fiftieth birthday there may be two candles on the cake, one in the shape of the numeral five followed by the other in the shape of the number zero.

Traditions
In addition to parties, it is common for people to receive gifts on their birthdays or surprise parties. However, sometimes it is expected of the person celebrating their birthday to treat their party guests instead; this varies depending on the local culture and may involve party gifts or other gestures.
In most English-speaking countries it is traditional to sing the song Happy Birthday to You to the honored person celebrating a birthday. Happy Birthday songs are common worldwide. Similar songs exist in other languages such as "Zhu ni sheng ri kuai le" in Mandarin Chinese, "Lang zal hij/zij leven" in Dutch, "Õnne soovime Sul" in Estonian, "Zum Geburtstag Viel Glück" in German, "Nα ζήσεις και χρόνια πολλά " in Greek, "Que los cumplas feliz" or "Feliz cumpleaños a ti" in Spanish, "Parabéns a você" in Portuguese, "Maligayang Bati" in Filipino, "Sto lat" in Polish, "Lá Bhreithe Shona Duit" in Irish, "Ja må du leva" or "Med en enkel tulipan" in Swedish, "Joyeux Anniversaire" or "Bonne Fête" in French, "Tanti Auguri a te" in Italian and "Iyi ki dogdun, Mutlu Yillar Sana" in Turkish. This song is a common greeting used on birthdays, along with greeting cards and verbal greetings with messages such as "I wish you a Happy Birthday" or "Happy Birthday." In Denmark, aside from cards and songs, the Danish flag is often raised and used as decorations at birthday parties. In Belgium, birthdays are celebrated in festivals over the course of several months.

As in my birthday card, i chose the birthday celebration of Malay culture. Ill change the 3 cupcakes to other suitable elements which depict the birthday celebration of Malay people.

Assignment 3 - birthday card

Now for this assignment, we are to redesign a birthday card and to choose only from the cards listed in the blog. It is almost the same as our previous work,(redesign logo). We are needed to add elements of local culture into the card and to depict how birthdays are celebrated in our culture.

Done!

My statement of Hari Raya..A Celeberation Of Happinesss!

Hari Raya is the day which we seek for forgiveness and forgive others by the greeting “maaf zahir dan batin” which translates loosely to “I seek forgiveness (from you) physically and spiritually”, for Hari Raya is a time to reconcile and renew relationships with others. This can be seen from one of the blue people i've drawn. On the right side shows day time where people usually go to the mosque in the morning to perform a special prayer just for the 1st day of Hari Raya.
On the left side shows myself having fun enjoying the night time playing with sparklers at my grandmother's ^_^

In my point of view,or what makes me think of this day is that Hari Raya is the day we should enjoy and have fun for it is the day of 'Breaking of The Fast'. After fasting for a month, which is a must for the muslims(for the enables), we should celeberate it with joy. From what i see seems to be enjoyable is having token sums of money which also means "duit raya" given from the adults as a reward for the children who has fast for a month, and also, celeberating during the night playing fire crackers and sparklers.Everybody is happy celeberating it,including the Chinese and Indians.
ok back to the progress..aand now i colored green for the grass and brown for the ground,erk..

and blue for the people celebrating Hari Raya..

Now,the main element, which is me.eheh.in the middle enjoying the celebration during the day and night.Since im a bit pale,i colored myself a yellowish-brown-like-beige,hermm..all this, still using the Live Paint Bucket tool,so everything seems so easy.just click click click and the colors are there.(make a collection of paths first then click with the Live Paint Bucket tool to the paths that you want the area to be colored...

same goes for the "duit raya".colored green, symbolizes moneeeey...

Im orange in the morning and purple at night;)

added some details(shadow) on the scarf using the pen tool...

and now, added some light effect for the sparklers by using the flare tool.see picture below...

As for the date,i used graphic style;image effect; drop shadow soft, colored purple, and yellow soft effect for "SEPTEMBER". I estimated the date of Hari Raya which probably will falls on the 20th.

The title of the celebration, 'Hari Raya Aidilfitri', Font(Myriad Pro), size(82), color(orange)...

The progress..

My sketch for the calendar. This is how it'll turn out to be later..

Firstly i traced my sketch using the pen tool..

I selected a collection of paths to color the calendar by using the Live Paint Bucket, just click the Live Paint Bucket tool on the paths of the drawing then paint the areas between paths(the red outline is the area where you want to color)..starting with the background.I used gradient tool for the background, blue+purple color on the right side and yellow+red color on the left side.

Then i colored the house and the mosque black and added some gradient effect (yellow+black) for the window of the house..

Ops..be right back!

Assignment 2 - Design a calendar

For this assignment,we are to design a calendar based on festive season. As typical as i can be,i chose the Malaysian's festive season of Hari Raya Aidilfitri whichs falls on the month of September.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is..

A muslim's festival and derived from Arabic sentences 'Eid ul-Fitr' which means 'Feast of the Breaking of the Fast'. Hari Raya Aidilfitri (also seen as Hari Raya Puasa, literally "Celebration Day of Fasting") is the Malay term for the Muslim festival of Eid ul-Fitr. Hari Raya is also known as Lebaran. Muslims in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore celebrate Eid like other Muslims throughout the world. The term "Hari Raya" literally means "Day of Celebration".

The Greetings..

The main greeting used by Muslims in Malaysia and Singapore is "Selamat Hari Raya" which means "Happy Eid" in Malay. Another greeting is "maaf zahir dan batin" which translates loosely to "I seek forgiveness (from you) physically and spiritually", for Hari Raya is a time to reconcile and renew relationships with others.

The Celebration..

During the day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri,It is customary for Malays to wear traditional Malay costumes. The dress for men is called baju Melayu while the women's are known as baju kurung and baju kebaya. Traditional textiles such as songket and batik are worn favourably during this day.
Muslims will attend Eid prayer in the morning and consecrate together harmoniously while taking the chance to meet and greet each other. Hari Raya is a very joyous day for children for this is the day where adults are extra generous. Children will be given token sums of money, also known as duit raya from their parents and elders.

During the night, there are often celebrations with sparklers and firecrackers. Despite of the enforcement of banning firecrackers, more Malay children turn to home-made firecrackers such as meriam buluh (bamboo cannon) as alternatives to commercial fireworks. Usually the lighting of firecrackers begins a few days before the end of Ramadan, and continues for about a week afterwards.

Choosing calendar..

We are to use one of the of calendars provided and to follow the design as well as the layout, just the objects can be changed but the positioning and the layout design must remain the same.

The calendar

and I chose..

By the descriptions and calendar chosen above, my design will be based on me,myself celebrating Hari Raya during the day and night and I will add elements which relates to it.

final logo wuhoo!

tadaaaaaaa!

The meanings of..

The coffee cups

The three coffee cups symbolizes malays, chinese and indians all in one country which is Malaysia. And the color yellow denotes happiness, warmth, cheers and joy,and in which i wanted to put it in a way that we,all 3 races can live in happiness n joyfulness together and which also means sitting, chilling and enjoying a cup of coffee together^-^

Banana leaf

Green is life. Abundant in nature, green signifies growth, renewal, health, and environment...Basically,this reminded me of Malay people, which we usually eat our traditional food 'nasi lemak' wrapped up in banana leaf.'Nasi lemak' also is usually served for breakfast, and so is coffee. So why not have a cup of hot coffee to go with it;)

Red circle

Denotes purity, joy, and celebration. Red is the color of happiness and prosperity for chinese people and may be used to attract good luck.It also symbolizes unity...and this is what pop out from my head when i think of red.The red rounded table that chinese uses to dine in for big celebration.A celebration for Chinese New Year and a celebration of the opening of the new local Starbucks coffee;D

The uniquely brown

Brown is a down-to-earth,warm neutral color.Which made me thought of little indian childrens with brown warm, innocent, happy faces with no feelings of worries in the world. This is what you will feel and enjoy in every sip of starbucks coffee. It stimulate the appetite and ease up your mind and wash out all the worries from job stress and tention.

Lastly, the green circle and texts.I kept it this way to preserve the originality of starbucks coffee.
